One of the benefits of visiting the Minnesota Genealogical Society library is free access to Origins.net, “the premier source for tracing your British and Irish ancestors.” Origins.net will be making upgrades to their servers on Saturday, May 4. Consequently, the site will not be available from 2 AM to 1 PM (Minnesota time).
Funded by the Irish Genealogical Society International (IGSI), Origins.net provides access to key Irish genealogical records such as Griffith’s Valuation, Censuses, Wills, Passenger lists, Militia records, and more. Even better, experienced Irish research volunteers at the library know how to formulate queries to maximize the value of the data! If you were planning to do Irish research at MGS on May 4, you should probably reschedule. At a minimum, call the library (651-455-9057) before visiting on Saturday afternoon, to make sure the service is back up and running.
An at-home alternative for researching Griffith’s Valuation is http://askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/. Their website says, “AskAboutIreland…is an initiative of public libraries together with local museums and archives in the digitisation and online publication of the original, the unusual and the unique material…to create a national Internet resource for culture.” Griffith’s Valuation on AskAboutIreland has an index and maps, similar to Origins.net.
Remember – May 11 is another Irish Saturday at the MGS Library. By then, the upgrade to Origins.net servers will be complete, and researchers with Irish expertise will be on hand to assist you!
