Oh, to be in County Clare this week! The Clare Roots Society is sponsoring a lecture on Thursday, April 17 in Ennis. Dr. Catherine Swift, lecturer in Irish Studies at Mary Immaculate College, Limerick, will be the guest speaker. Her presentation is entitled “Brian Ború, The Last Great High King of Ireland.”
The year 2014 marks the millennium of the anniversary of the death of Brian Ború and the Battle of Clontarf. Brian Ború was born in Killaloe in County Clare in 941 and he became high King of Ireland in 1002. He is associated with sites throughout Ireland but also many in Co Clare, such as Killaloe (his birthplace) and Inis Cealtra, Scattery Island in Kilrush and Lough Derg. His descendants are the O’Brien Clan who are also associated with many sites in Co Clare.
The lecture will take place at the civic rooms, Ennis Town Council, Drumbiggle Road, beginning at 8pm. There is a cover charge of €5 for non-members.
