On the heels of Findmypast’s announcement that they will be launching indexed Irish Roman Catholic parish records, Ancestry has released a similar statement.
The National Library of Ireland digitized the subject records and made them available online (free!) last July, but without an index. Now it appears both Findmypast and Ancestry will have transcriptions and indexes online by the end of March, 2016.
I assume Findmypast and Ancestry have engaged independent indexers to complete their projects. If so, it’s really good news for those of us searching for Irish ancestors in the 1800s. Multiple sets of eyes transcribing the barely-legible handwriting will increase our odds of finding a name or townland. ‘Twill be a good day for the Irish when the indexes come online.
