What U.S. states are the most Irish?

Nine U.S. states have more Irish percentage population than any others, according to an IrishCentral article.

This became important to us in planning publicity for the upcoming Celtic Connections Conference. Where might we expect to draw participants? Where should we advertise?

Can you guess what states have over 17 percent Irish population? Not New York or California.

Here are the nine states with the most Irishness:  Montana, Iowa, Pennsylvania, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island.

Twenty-one other states have 15% to 16.9% Irish population, including several Midwestern states like Minnesota and Wisconsin.

The U.S. census shows over 35 million Americans claim Irish descent, with an additional 5 million claiming Ulster Irish roots.

It’s a case of “Erin go Bragh” in most states as only German-Americans have greater numbers.
