Pesky hand-writing

A New Zealand blog-reader asked us for assistance in interpreting his great-grandfather’s marriage record.

In 1872 Johannes Breen married Widow Bridget Horgan, nee Cahill, in Tralee.

A portion of the marriage document is shown as the second record below. The residence of Johannes’ father, Francis Breen, looks like Mt something.

IGSI researcher Audrey Leonard looked at the index of townlands from the 1901 census. Her conclusion: Of all the townlands starting Mont or Mount, the only one that seems to be a reasonable fit is a townland named Mountleader in Co. Cork, West Riding.

Mountleader is located in the current area of Millstreet, which is about 35 miles from Tralee.

Bridget lived in Casteisland, between Tralee and Mountleader.

Could Mountleader/Millstreet be the Breen townland of origin?
