In 1830 the Ordnance Survey started the task of mapping the entire country of Ireland at a scale of six inches to one mile. Notes taken during the survey were called “Memoirs,” coming from the abbreviation of the word “Aide-Memoire,” an 18th century term for topographical descriptions accompanying maps.
